I need rehabilitation from my Pusher Love Girl. Time to throw on the Suit & Tieand hit the dance floor, cause I Don’t Hold The Wall up. I see her smackin’ on Strawberry Bubblegumand I catch Tunnel Vision with images of ridin’ in a Spaceship Coupe with That Girl. As we Let the Groove Get In, our kindred spirits share same reflection through each other’s eyes like Mirrors. However, uncertainty via theory of relativity raises question to either ride the wave, or dive directly into the Blue Ocean Floor.
By now most of you have heard the new JT records (i.e. Suit and Tie) or at least seen him on countless television shows and award ceremonies, so our head honcho Damon Howard thought of doing something clever by writing a “lovenote“ type piece that contains all of the titles on the album (above). The album is a proper Soul/R&B throwback compared to the club banging former, which is a healthy direction for the more mature sounding Justin. Questlove of The Roots and Okay Player wrote a very interesting review of the album on Okayplayer.com (click to peep), which also implies that the second LP will come out by November (2 10-song albums equal the 20/20 experience). Justin has confirmed the second album, so you know it’s going down for sure.
Here’s an excerpt of whatQuestlove says that totally sums up how we feel here at the SwitchFlip Headquarters about the albums mature & soulful approach sonically:
“I admire the balls it took to make this record. cause he coulda easily urshurd his work in and made diplo his teddy riley to 20/20′s dangerous instead of sticking with timb’s Quincy. I love the songs but was worried on how he will cut the prime rib to feed to toothless babies” -Questlove
So, the new No Doubtsingle has been out for a few weeks now. Here’s the video for “Settle Down” off of their upcoming album Push and Shove, which is slated to hit cyber shelves September 25th. Whatcha think about the video and song? Doesn’t Gwen Stefani and the Boys seem like they are in a physical time warp from 10 years ago? They look great, and have returned to their signature sound as a group. Some critics have been saying that it doesn’t sound like anything new, but then again, if they went with a different direction they’d have something awful to say as well. After their appearance at the Teen Choice Awardsa couple weeks ago, it looks like there’s no stopping the group’s fanbase that bridges the gap between young and “older”. Make sure you catch them during the NFL Kickoff game (Giants vs. Cowboys)on Sept 5th. Is this song up to your standards for the band? Let us know what you think…
Talib Kweli (1/2 of Black Star) is back with a new single “Push Thru” from his upcoming solo album Prisoner of Conscious due late summer/early fall. The Brooklyn MC (widely known as a leader of “conscious rap”) has had loads of critical acclaim and collaborations with music industry heavyweights. However, it seems his deep legacy of work with Mos Def, Hi-Tek, Kanye West, Just Blaze, Will.I.Am, Pete Rock, Madlib, Ahmet Zappa, etc. have yet to establish him as one of the top 20 commercial successes in the genre. Even Jay-Z praised his skills in a verse on The Black Albumstating that if thoughtful lyrics were enough to be at the top then “…I’d probably be lyrically Talib Kweli.“ Regardless of top tier commercial gain from the music, Talib has focused on bringing thought provoking and clever wordplay which upholds the true definition of a real MC.
He’s been included in Complex Magazine’s 30 Best Rappers in Their 30′s. As a solo artist, he has branched out into all types of styles and genres, including a tribute to Nigerian musician Fela Kuti. Now armed with his own label Blacksmith (which includes artists Jean Grae andStrong Arm Steady), he’s pushing the boundaries of conscious rap with the new mainstream leaders of the thought school such as Kendrick Lamar & Jay Electronica. Peep the video for “Push Thru“, as it takes you on a tour of each emcees hometown and how their verse pertains to their respective cities. Let us know who you think had the best verse!
