Talib Kweli (Black Star/Reflection Eternal) drops his latest solo joing Prisoner of Consciousness today (May 7th). Critically acclaimed as one of the best MCs to ever spit on the mic, Kweli delivers another classic album full of his signature “Conscious Rap“. The Brooklyn Bomber features some great collaborations on this one (Kendrick Lamar, Curren$y, Busta Rhymes, Miquel, Nelly, etc). We are surprised that his main partner Yasiin Bey (aka MOS DEF) doesn’t make an appearance on the album, but Talib is well known to hold his own as the uber-prolific half of the duo Black Star. Check out the RZA produced “Rocket Ships” and the both coast strong “Push Thru“ below. You can stream the album by clicking the title above, but go out and definitely support Talib’s new album via iTunes and all the other cyberstores.
While we don’t personally understand the phenomenon, it’s blatantly obvious this new PSY video “Gentleman” resonates with about 90 Million people around the world in about 72 hours of it’s release!! It beat the record held by Justin Bieber’s “Girlfriend” (8 million views in 24 hours) by 12 million views in one day! So, all you K-Pop (South Korean Pop) lovers who need more of Park Jae-sang’s “Gangnam Style” in their life, here you go!
Sisters & Bredren,
I need rehabilitation from my Pusher Love Girl. Time to throw on the Suit & Tie and hit the dance floor, cause I Don’t Hold The Wall up. I see her smackin’ on Strawberry Bubblegum and I catch Tunnel Vision with images of ridin’ in a Spaceship Coupe with That Girl. As we Let the Groove Get In, our kindred spirits share same reflection through each other’s eyes like Mirrors. However, uncertainty via theory of relativity raises question to either ride the wave, or dive directly into the Blue Ocean Floor.
By now most of you have heard the new JT records (i.e. Suit and Tie) or at least seen him on countless television shows and award ceremonies, so our head honcho Damon Howard thought of doing something clever by writing a “lovenote“ type piece that contains all of the titles on the album (above). The album is a proper Soul/R&B throwback compared to the club banging former, which is a healthy direction for the more mature sounding Justin. Questlove of The Roots and Okay Player wrote a very interesting review of the album on Okayplayer.com (click to peep), which also implies that the second LP will come out by November (2 10-song albums equal the 20/20 experience). Justin has confirmed the second album, so you know it’s going down for sure.
Here’s an excerpt of what Questlove says that totally sums up how we feel here at the SwitchFlip Headquarters about the albums mature & soulful approach sonically:
“I admire the balls it took to make this record. cause he coulda easily urshurd his work in and made diplo his teddy riley to 20/20′s dangerous instead of sticking with timb’s Quincy. I love the songs but was worried on how he will cut the prime rib to feed to toothless babies” -Questlove
Bredren and Sistahs,
Swedish electro-soul pop quartet Little Dragon has been #SwitchflipCertified for the past few years. Their latest album Ritual Union spawned a string of hits and critical acclaim since late 2011 into 2012. Here is one of their singles “Sunshine” remixed by LA’s lo-fi electro producer Shlohmo. Although the original single/video came out early summer 2012, Shlohmo actually produced this remix last May but never released it until now. Check out the remix of “Sunshine“ below. Compare it to the original song and video as well and let us know what you think!
Happy Friday Earthlings,
Outkast’s Big Boi is at it again with a new single entitled “Lines“. This creative ATL & NY collaboration features Harlem’s A$AP Rocky and Saratoga Springs’ Phantogram. The hard hitting electro-space funk jam is definitely a new musical departure in the right direction. A$AP’s braggadocio fits well with Big Boi‘s flow. Sarah Barthel‘s signature sound on the hook does justice in true Phantogram fashion. We are excited for the ATLien’s follow up to the critically acclaimed Sir Lucious Left Foot Son of Chico Dusty. Look out for Big Boi’s new solo album Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors which is slated to hit cybershelves on Dec 11th via Def Jam Records.
